In the very early 2oth century, in Oklahoma Territory, cowboy Curly calls to invite Laurey to that evening’s Box Social. To spite Curley, Laurey agrees to go to the Social with Jud Fry, Aunt Eller’s surly farmhand. Meanwhile Laurey’s friend Ado Annie, who has an ‘understanding’ with cowboy Will Parker, but who falls for nearly every man she meets, is currently infatuated with peddler Ali Hakim. We follow the action as it unfolds before, during and after the Box Social.

The pair end happily married, living in modest comfort after Arthur loses his inheritance to an unscrupulous business man.
